According to the Oxford dictionary, to be Jealous means to feel or show an ENVIOUS RESENTMENT (bitter anger or annoyance) towards someone or their achievements, possessions or perceived advantages.

What is envy?

A feeling of discontent or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities or luck.

What does the Bible say about these?

Proverbs 14:30 says,

“Peace of mind makes the body healthy, but Jealousy (envy in some versions) is like cancer.”

Have you noticed that those who live in constant envy and Jealousy of others are never at peace with themselves? Have you also noticed that those who live with the habit of Jealousy and envy rarely do much with their own lives? The reason is they’re so stuck watching others and their lives and in most cases trying to stop or frustrate them that they have no time to do anything for themselves and even when they do it rarely works because you can’t wish someone else and and expect to have an easy life.

Yes, some go as far as deliberately trying to stop others out of the envy in their hearts and this is the manifestation of an evil thought that has had time to grow and fester in the heart for so long. The Bible says,

“Jealousy (envy) is like a cancer”

It is impossible to be filled with that much hate for others and expect your life to work out as you’d like. If things aren’t working out for you or around you, have you searched your heart to make sure you’re not living in hate and envy for others? If not, please do that now.

Some would say envy is not hate but I tell you it is, it is both hate for oneself and the other person because the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:4,

“Love does not envy*

And people who hate others cannot say they love themselves because if you love yourself enough, forgiveness, compassion, and love would be one of the things you have in abundance to share and give.

Job 5:2 says, “Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple.”

This is a trait that many people including Christians battle with and the reasons for this most times is our inability to see and appreciate all that God has done and provided in our lives, our inability to be content with all God has done for us, our ingratitude. And a person who lives a life of ingratitude is easily depressed and filled with bitterness, and bitterness is a tool for keeping people stuck at a stage or place in life.

Reasons we feel Jealousy and Envy

1) Ingratitude

1 Thessalonians 5:18 “No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 5:20 “In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father.”

2) Greed and Covetousness

Hebrews 13:5 “Stay away from the love of money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never forsake you.”

St. Luke 12:15 Then he said, ” Beware! Don’t be greedy for what you don’t have. Real life is not measured by how much we own.”

3) Comparison with others

1 Corinthians 4:7 “Who made you superior to others? Didn’t God give you everything you have? Well, then, how can you boast, as if what you have were not a gift?

4) Low self esteem

Psalms 139:14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well. Recite this always to combat low self esteem.

5) Lack of intimacy with God

James 4:8 “Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners! Purify your hearts, you hypocrites!”

Father in Heaven, please take away from me every feeling of Ingratitude, that my eyes may be opened to see all that you have done and are still doing in my life. In Jesus name I pray.

Father help me love you and myself enough to be able to love others the way I should. In Jesus’ name I pray

In the name of Jesus I command out of my life every spirit of Jealousy and Envy. I decree and declare that I only notice and practice love. Hate has no place in me. Amen!
